Formatting Tips
For employers to read your resume, regardless of which program you have saved your resume on. It will be stored as a plain text document. By creating your resume in this manner you will not be able to use specific formatting that is normally built into your word processing program. (i.e., Italic, Underline, Bold, different Fonts and Font sizes, Indenting, etc.)
After completing the cut and pasting process for your resume, you may be required to do some clean-up to remove your formatting. To eliminate having to perform clean-up you may also open your document in your word processing program and save it either as a “plain text” or “rich text” document. After saving, you may then cut and paste the document into the area and have limited changes to make.
When cutting and pasting your document please keep in mind:
A. Word Wrap does not create line breaks. By checking this field before pasting, it will be easier to view your complete resume in the cut and paste field. Employers will still see your resume in full-page formatting.
B. Fonts are displayed differently for employers based on their computer system’s default font type and size. Formatting will appear differently for Bold, Italics, etc. in plain or rich text formatting.
C. Alignment is set to Left Justified when you save your files in “Plain Text” or Rich Text” Format. This is the preferred format for scanning resumes or for online viewing. Please do not center any text.
D. Special Characters (ie. Mathematical Symbols, Accent Marks or “Smart Quotes”, etc.) do not format correctly in “Plain Text” or Rich Text” formatted files.
E. Tabs are not recognized as well in “Plain Text” or Rich Text” formatted files.
F. Spell Check is highly recommended in your word processing program before cutting and pasting your “Plain Text” or Rich Text” formatted files.
G. Proofread your resume after cutting and pasting into the text area before you submit your resume.
